Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:15
What it means: The really cool thing about this scripture is the simple word “sign”. There are so many hidden and also very obvious signs leading up to the birth of Jesus. Why do you think God did this? I think to show just how powerful the story would be. Remember he bad a ton of doubters and critics! Can you imagine being told so many specifics about a life occurrence before it happens? He left no room for doubt! It shows just how powerful and majestic he truly is. Not to mention a VIRGIN giving birth. He didn’t simply have a stork bring down Jesus and leave him on a doorstep, he had step by step prophesies that played exactly out! This also led up to the greatness of who Jesus would be and the message he was bringing. You know when you begin a movie and they have that elaborate introduction from the production company. Take the Disney caste before a Disney movie for example. The sound of “the movie is starting”. I always make us have the sound on super loud during that because it helps me get excited and in the mood for the movie. That’s what I feel like this verse is. A big production to prepare for what’s to come! Ok, I just compared the story of Jesus to a movie into but you know what I mean!
So how many of you have noticed his name is Jesus not Immanuel? It very clearly states in the Bible in Matthew 1:25 that he should be named Jesus. So does he have two names or what? The easy answer to this is yes. It is kind of understood that OTHERS will call him Immanuel but his name is to be Jesus. Immanuel was more of a surname to distinguish that he came from God. Immanuel meaning “God with us”.
Those that know and have studied the story of the birth of Jesus know there is just so much behind it than a few simple scriptures that we write on our Christmas cards! I am still learning how impactful all the events leading up to it were, how many prophesies there were and what they may mean.
Challenge: If you don’t know it very well besides what we teach in Sunday school, I encourage you to read more behind the scenes of it! It is so interesting and brilliant! Start a bible study with your family to learn together. One of the biggest learning experiences I have ever had was a very in-depth bible study group through Church. It helped me understand how to read it all and dive deeper into scripture than just the words written. It really helps to discuss things with other followers and the more you talk, the more you learn! I enjoy each year digging more and more into this story.
Prayer: Lord, Wow… thank you for this beautiful story and Lord thank you for this beautiful history that we celebrate each year. You are so majestic and powerful thank you for loving us SO much that you shared your son with us. Thank you for loving us SO much you created such a wonderful story that we celebrate thousands of years later. We celebrate your perfect son, Jesus, Prince of Peace! Amen.
Sending Love, Stacy
